Dental Crowns

Decay and injury are always a constant risk. Either of them can cut the life of your teeth short. However, in some instances, if your tooth isn’t doing so well, you can solve the problem with a dental crown. This simple dental procedure is an excellent way to save a chipped, cracked, or decaying tooth. At Diamond Bar Dental Studio, our passion is to keep your smile intact with our range of general dentistry services. With our skill and experience, we can provide top-quality care for every patient we meet.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a “cap” that we place over a damaged tooth. Once set, it allows the tooth to function and look entirely normal. When you catch tooth decay early on, you can often treat it with fillings. But, when a tooth reaches a certain point of decay or receives damage, a crown might be your solution.

The crown itself goes right over the target tooth. Depending on the material, your crown might blend in perfectly with your other teeth. Each crown is custom-made to fit your mouth and match the shape of your natural teeth. With dental crowns, you can protect your tooth from additional damage and restore it to full usage.

What Are Dental Crowns Made From?

The type of material your crown is made from can differ. Each material has its advantages and drawbacks. During your appointment, your Diamond Bar dentists will help you decide which is best for you.

Metal Dental Crowns

Unsurprisingly, metal crowns are the longest-lasting. Metal crowns are convenient because they require only a small amount of the target tooth to be shaved down. However, their color is noticeable. Most patients usually get metal crowns for teeth that are out of sight. But once you have them, they are durable and great for protecting your tooth.

Porcelain Dental Crowns

Porcelain crowns are popular for when you want to a crown to be strong, but also match your natural tooth color. They are also versatile. Porcelain can be fused with metal for a compound crown, or you can have an all-porcelain crown. If you are allergic to metals, they can also cover rear teeth. The only downside is that they can be chipped.

If you want an affordable crown that still does its job, go for a resin one. They protect your tooth just as well as other materials, but won’t break the bank. However, they aren’t as durable as other materials. So, you’ll likely need to replace them after a while. Still, they are a great way to protect your tooth from further damage. And, you can always change to another material down the road.

Are Dental Crowns Right for Me?

When you come into Diamond Bar Dental Studio, we treat you as a unique patient. What works for one person might not for another. We work with you to develop a treatment plan that suits your individual needs.

Regarding dental crowns, if you match any of the below needs, you might be ready for a crown.

  • You need to cover a weakened tooth and hold it together.
  • A tooth is worn or broken.
  • The tooth around a filling has fallen away.
  • Some teeth are misshapen.
  • Discolored teeth.

Dental Crown Procedure

Most of the time, getting a crown follows two primary steps: preparation and installation.

During your first visit, you’ll take X-Rays, and one of your dentists will inspect your tooth. If it looks ready, we can continue on. If not, you might need a root canal or other procedure first.

Dental Exam & Digital
Not valid with insurance or any other offer. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Other restrictions may apply. Not redeemable for cash value.

Otherwise, we file the tooth down and take an impression of it. We then send this impression to our dental lab to make a unique crown that matches your mouth. In the meantime, we typically provide patients with a temporary crown.

Once your crown is ready, it is time to place it. We may administer local anesthesia for your comfort and proceed to set the crown over the prepared tooth.

Recovery from Dental Crowns

Recovering is quick and easy in most cases. You can expect some sensitivity around the target tooth. And some patients experience soreness in the surrounding gums. These will both fade soon, but can also be managed with OTC pain medication. If you experience any further discomfort, speak with our dentists, and we’ll assist.

When you receive your crown, you can return to work almost immediately. Even though you may feel fine, it is still vital to follow our care instructions for your crown. To prolong its life, you’ll need to keep up a healthy oral care routine.

Like most people, I really don't like going to the dentist. And I avoid it whenever possible. Dr. Jeon made me very comfortable and put me at ease. I tend to be anxious and she explained everything that would happen and what she was doing. I would highly recommend Dr. Jeon to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, gentle dentist with an excellent bedside manner.

I called Dr. Cho because of a dental emergency. I was in so much pain and stress because I thought I would have to wait all weekend before seeing a dentist. Dr. Cho was accommodating, comforting, and really did everything he could to turn a bad situation into a manageable one. I can't thank him enough for his kindness and flexibility. I would highly recommend Dr. Cho to my family and friends (and anyone looking for an excellent dentist).

Best dentist I have ever been too, and that is truly the most genuine compliment that can be given as I am a practicing dentist myself. I trust no one else with my teeth and my own dental needs. He is an exceptional dentist and I truly love his work and attention to detail. He prides himself in quality and I value that a lot.
